With our Carmelite blend, we've already disproven the notion that good Italian espresso isn't available in organic/fair trade quality. With Maranello, we're going a step further – bringing southern Italy to Vienna, also in organic and fair trade quality.
Why Maranello? Maranello is the headquarters of Ferrari and not far from the test track are the vineyards of Azienda Agricola Rossi Barattini, whose exceptional Aceto Balsamico and balsamic cherries (in typical Ferrari red) we sold for years.
Even from several kilometers away, you can hear the roaring cars during a visit. This untamed power in the otherwise tranquil peace of the vineyards and cherry orchards inspired our name.
The Maranello contains 50% Robusta (one of the best Robustas we've ever encountered) and is therefore the strongest of our blends in terms of caffeine content. The tricky thing is, though: it doesn't taste strong. Robustas exhibit the strong-mild phenomenon: whether pure or in blends, these coffees taste milder, more straightforward, and less intense than Arabicas, which, with their nuanced flavors, are perceived as stronger—a phenomenon we've confirmed in numerous blind taste tests with our customers. Objectively speaking, however, Robusta beans are stronger, containing more caffeine and chlorogenic acids than the comparatively mild Arabicas.
The Maranello is a robust Italian espresso brewed with a portafilter machine, but it also works very well in a fully automatic machine and leaves a long, chocolatey aftertaste. Its crema is dense and thick, and the flavor is dry and chocolatey. It can also develop its full strength in a screw-top pot or French press. However, its use as filter coffee is recommended only for more experienced users.
